CBNRM Courses Offered at the College

Over 700 students per year matriculate at the College.

Courses taught by the College and accredited by the Zambian Department of Technical, Educational, and Vocational Training include the following: 

1.  Village Scout Training enables local residents selected by Community Resource Boards (CRBs) to effectively police and manage wildlife and other natural resources.  Course emphasizes law enforcement, Students learning how to measure trophy size of animals huntetd by safari clients as part of their monitoring skills.  Data from trophy size are used to help set sustainable hunting quotas. monitoring of resource use and abundance, crop protection from wild animals, and facilitating community education and support for CBNRM.  Basic training is six months.

2.  Area Manager Training develops a qualified local person selected by the CRB to administer and supervise village scouts as well as advise the CRB on technical aspects of natural resource management, including quota setting, land use planning, joint-venture opportunitiCommunity farmers are learning to plant fruit trees within electric fence enclosures.  Shown here is tree planting course where orange trees are being introduced for the first time.  In several years, residents will have another source of income by selling their oranges to tourist lodges.es, and building public support for resource management. 

3.  Advanced CBNRM Training  increases local understanding about the CBNRM policy of Zambia's Wildlife Act and promotes its success through democratic leadership and effective community organization.

4.  Food Security, Bee-keeping, and Agroforestry are specific modules that enhance household skills in reducing food shortages as a major cause of illegal hunting of wildlife.  The college has an active extension service to support this training.

5.  Community-based Bookkeeping Women business groups are given basic book-keeping skills to help them run their enterprises. develops local capacity to manage financial accounts of revenues generated by CBNRM to support community development and resource management.

6.  Leathercraft and Tanning teaches community members to tan animal hides using vegetable tannins from native plants and to make leathercraft products that are marketable.

7.  Traditional Ruler Leadership provides local chiefs with understanding about land tenure, private sector joint ventures, rural development concept, and participatory styles of leadership.

8.  Engine Repair and Maintenance develops local capacity to maintain and repair engines, such as vehicles and grinding mills.

9.  Community Health Worker Training  eStudents at the African College enjoy an environment conducive to learning.  Having access to a library is a new experience to most.nables communities to employ local residents to administer primary care and family planning.

10.  in a)  community development b)  financial management, and c)  resource management are separate courses providing communities with increased skills to produce more renewable resources, to profit from these resources and to use these revenues to support community development needs.

Non-credited courses are given when demand and need is identified by the College.  Past courses have included well construction, building skills, and brick making.
